近代史上的臺灣，自1920年代起，迄至1947年二二八事件，人民對抗統治者的歷程，是臺灣人民追求民主與人權的具體寫照。1920年代，由林獻堂及蔣渭水等知識份子所領導的「臺灣議會請願運動」及「臺灣文化協會」，以文化啟蒙方式，啟發人民對於民主及人權的認知，爭取設置臺灣議會，追求完全的地方自治。1947年的二二八事件，正是實現地方自治，落實民主價值的機會，所以二二八事件處理委員會提出四十二條要求，要求制定省自治法，以便實現國父建國大綱之理想，無奈當時的統治者－臺灣省行政長官陳儀視之為叛亂行為，請求國民政府主席蔣中正派兵鎮壓與槍殺，造成許多政治菁英及無辜民眾的傷亡，此後，臺灣社會長期處於恐怖氛圍當中，直到1987年二二八和平日促進會發起平反運動之後，才逐漸走出二二八事件的陰影，邁向自由民主的社會。
